CLEAR LAKE INVITATIONAL
OCTOBER 20& 21, 2001

The 2001 Invitational was held at Clear Lake under sunny, calm conditions. The lake was under intense fishing pressure, as WON Bass, with 106 boats, was holding its Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. This was the first Invitational involving all three Northern California float tube clubs - the Sonoma County Belly Boat Bass Club, the San Jose Bass 'n Tubes, and the Redding Area Sport Tube Association (RASTA). All three clubs did get together in May 2001 at the U.S. Open hosted by the San Jose Bass 'n Tubes.

Andy Parsons had a strong Day 1, then held off a Day 2 charge by Daniel Bass to capture the victory. It was Andy's 2nd Invitational win in the last three years. Robert Linden also had an outstanding Day 1 and made it stand up to garner third place. Thirty-nine anglers participated, a new Invitational record!

On Saturday, Andy Parsons brought in a 5-fish limit of 22.77 lbs, anchored by the big fish of the day & tournament of 9.57 lbs. It went for a white buzzbait at about 6 AM. Robert Linden took the 2nd spot with two fish for 12.57 lbs, including Day 1's 2nd big fish of 8.06 lbs. In 3rd was Jeff Smith with two beauties of 5.63 and 5.49 lbs for a total of 11.12 lbs. Josh Schroeder was 4th with 10.72 lbs, while lurking in the 5th spot was Daniel Bass. He had Saturday's only other 5-fish limit for 9.90 lbs. Another noteworthy fish was Paul Mibach's (aka FIT's) 5.45 lb toad, while several fish in the 4 lb range made it to the scales. It was a tough day for most, as only 18 of 39 anglers weighed in fish.

Sunday proved to be just as tough. Only one 5-fish limit was brought in, again by Daniel Bass, although this time for a tidy 14.57 lbs. Andy Parsons, however, managed to scratch out two fish in the waning hours of the tournament for 3.54 lbs and took home the victory with a 2-day total of 26.31 lbs. Daniel Bass was 2nd with 24.27 lbs. Young Robert Linden held onto 3rd by squeezing out a 1.44 lb fish on Sunday for a 14.01 lb total. Mitch Ternan rallied with 4 fish for 9.85 lbs and vaulted into 4th place with a final tally of 13.87 lbs. Josh Schroeder brought in 2.92 lbs on Sunday and finished 5th with 13.64 lbs. Todd Iwamoto staged another of his patented rallies to weigh-in three fish on Sunday for 7.96 lbs and ended up in 6th with 12.04 lbs. In 7th was Deren Kozenko, who pulled out the 2nd big fish of the day on Sunday of 5.45 lbs as time was running out. His 2-day total was 11.80 lbs. Scott Hupp had a solid Day 1 with four fish, then struggled on Day 2 with just one keeper but made it to 8th with 11.23 lbs. Jeff Smith rode his Day 1 catch to a 9th place finish of 11.12 lbs. Meanwhile, Mike Bogges had a big Day 2, capturing the big fish of the day of 7.31 lbs and rallied to take 10th with 11.02 lbs. In 11th place was Kevin Marcheschi, who brought in 9.32 lbs, while in 12th was Darce Caldwell with 7.98 lbs. Rounding out the winners' circle was RASTA's Tim Zanbergen in 13th with 7.40 lbs. Congratulations to all!

Rich Caro, last year's Invitational champ, won a tough casting contest on Saturday evening, putting eight casts on the mark in only one minute! An outstanding raffle was held as well, with excellent prizes including a Flowmaster muffler system and fully-rigged WaterSkeeter kickboat. Special thanks to Todd Iwamoto for a tremendous job in keeping the event organized and moving along - the casting contest and raffle were over by 8:05 PM! Also, hats off to Jeff Andress and Kevin Marcheschi for gathering some terrific donations. Thanks as well to Tad Montgomery of RASTA for some great stuff for the raffle. Finally, John Lake and Paul Mibach (aka FIT) helped out with some outstanding donations, including Okuma reels and hand-poured soft plastics.

To all of our many generous sponsors - thanks! And thanks to all who took the time and made the journey to take part in this float tubing jamboree.
